Adventure tourism in Luang Prabang was just developing when we started to think about how to develop a fair tourism project. We contacted the local government, an NGO and started developing a concept. Since implementation we have experienced many changes and nowadays, many people visit the Fair Trek region. A village fund has been set up with the government and is still managed through the local authorities.
From every Luang Prabang Fair Trek tour you book with Tiger Trail, village funds are supported. The Luang Prabang “Fair Trek fund” benefits 7 villages in the area. This money can be invested by the villages, for example in infrastructure programs, schools, improving the water and electricity supply.
Apart from the fund, villagers can earn additional income directly from the tourists brought to the villages, by offering services like accommodation, food or selling handicrafts. The money from this goes directly to the families offering the services to the tourists.
