Luang Prabang was the starting point…
Adventure tourism in Luang Prabang was just developing when we already started to think about how to develop a fair tourism project. We contacted the local government, an NGO (SNV) and started developing a concept based on succesful examples from throughout the region. This was in 2007. Since implementation we have experienced many changes as well as challenges and nowadays, a great number of travelers from around the world visit the Fair Trek region. A village fund has been set up with the government and is still managed through the local authorities.
In the meantime our team from Tiger Trail has developed other approached of fair tourism in Laos that include VolunTourism, WorkHolidays and other community involving adventures.
From every Luang Prabang Fair Trek tour a guest is booking with Tiger Trail, village funds are supported. The Luang Prabang “Fair Trek fund” benefits 7 villages in the Luang Prabang area. This money can be invested by the villages, for example in small infrastructure programs, local village schools, improving the water and electricity supplies or similar.
Apart from the fund, villagers can earn additional income directly from tourism interaction in the villages. Villagers are encouraged and have received awareness training for the tourism related mechanisms of micro-economy and can offer services like accommodation, food or selling their handmade handicrafts. The money from this goes directly to the families offering the services.
